LETTER TO FILMMAKERS AND PRODUCERS SCREENING THEIR FILMS AT THE HAIFA FILM FESTIVAL IN ISRAEL

Like you, we work in the film industry as actors, filmmakers, technicians, and producers. We are Palestinians, Syrians, and Lebanese. Like you, we are passionate about our craft. Like you, we are aware that the places where our films are screened carry meaning and significance that sometimes transcend us, but for which we bear a political and moral responsibility.

As you probably know, your film is being screened at the Haifa Film Festival in Israel, which runs from September 26 to October 3, 2026, and is funded and supported by the Israeli government, in particular by the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the ministry of foreign affairs and the Israeli Film Council. It is also funded by the Haifa municipality, which practices apartheid against its Palestinian minority and is home to cyberwarfare companies collaborating with the Israeli military. Haifa is located less than 100 km from southern Syria and less than 40 km from southern Lebanon, areas occupied by Israel where many villages have been razed. Haifa is located 45 km from the West Bank, where colonization and ethnic cleansing are intensifying day by day. Haifa is located 150 km from Gaza, where the extermination of Palestinians continues with impunity.

You are probably aware that the State of Israel is accused of genocide before the highest international courts and that it is actively waging a political propaganda campaign to present a respectable image to the world -the “Brand Israel”- which mobilizes culture as a communication tool. The Haifa Film Festival is part of this cultural showcase. Palestine does not exist in the festival’s programming. The current situation of occupation and systematic destruction taking place just a few kilometers from Haifa is denied, and Israel’s colonial and genocidal character is concealed. Instead, a respectable, democratic, and liberal image is being projected. And this is achieved, among other things, through the screening of your film.

Several invited filmmakers have decided to withdraw their films from the Haifa Film Festival. You, for your part, have not spoken out. We can well imagine that you do not wish to be instrumentalized by an Israeli propaganda campaign. But, undoubtedly, despite yourself, you have contributed to the normalization of a genocidal state. We are particularly hurt by this – we who suffer colonization and ethnic cleansing in our very flesh, we who resist every day against our planned erasure.

You know this just as well as we do: in this world where we must unite against reactionary forces, every act of speaking out counts, every refusal counts. It is never too late.
